SBV is the sole issuer of currency of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Its monetary unit is dong, abbreviated as VND.

Vietnam’s current monetary system consists of 2 types: banknotes and coins.

Banknotes have 12 denominations: 500,000 VND, 200,000 VND, 100,000 VND, 50,000 VND, 20,000 VND, 10,000 VND, 5,000 VND, 2,000 VND, 1,000 VND, 500 VND, 200 VND and 100 VND.

Coins have 5 denominations: 5,000 VND, 2,000 VND, 1,000 VND, 500 VND and 200 VND.

1. Banknotes

From 2003, the State Bank ofVietnamapplies modern science and technology in producing banknotes in order to enhance quality of printing as well as security features of Vietnamese banknotes. Therefore, in some periods, two kinds of notes having the same denomination but different designs have been circulated together.

On 17 Dec, 2003 the SBV issued 2 additional kinds of notes: 500,000 VND and 50,000 VND, printed in polymer. On 1stSep, 2004 the SBV issued 100,000 VND note, printed in polymer. On 17 May, 2006, the SBV continued to issue 20,000 VND polymer note. On 30 Aug, 2006, the SBV issued 2 kinds of notes: 200,000 VND and 10,000 VND printed in polymer.

From September 1st, 2007, the SBV announced to terminate the circulation of cotton banknotes of the denominations of VND 100.000 and VND 50.000. Then cotton banknote of the denominations of VND 20.000 and VND 10.000 were uncirculated from January 1, 2013.

Vietnam’s current circulated banknotes are as follows:

Banknote 100,000 VND (polymer style note) issued on 01 September, 2004

Banknote 50,000 VND (polymer style note)issued on 17 December, 2003

Banknote 10,000VND(polymer style note)issued on 30 August, 2006

Banknote 5,000 VND(cotton style note) issued on 15 January, 1993

Banknote 2,000 VND(cotton style note) issued on 20 October, 1989

Banknote 1,000 VND(cotton style note) issued on 20 October, 1989

Banknote 500 VND(cotton style note) issued on 15 August, 1989

Banknote 200 VND(cotton style note) issued on 30 September, 1987

Banknote 100 VNDissued on 02 May, 1992

2. Coins

On 17 December, 2003, the SBV issued coins with 3 denominations: 5,000 VND, 1,000 VND and 200 VND. On 01 April, 2004 SBV issued coins with 2 denominations: 2,000 VND and 500 VND. Reissuing coins not only markedVietnamcurrencies’ stability of value, but also improvedVietnamcurrency system, marking it to international practices and reducing costs of issuing currencies with small denominations.
