In Hanoi, on January 22, 2018, the Deputy Governor Nguyen Thi Hong of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) had a meeting with Mr. Stephan Danninger - Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – Singapore Regional Training Institute (STI) and Mr. Natan Epstein - STI Deputy Director.
At the meeting, SBV Deputy Governor Nguyen Thi Hong welcomed Mr. Stephan Danninger and his colleagues to visit and work in Vietnam in the framework of the regional training on “Macroeconomic Diagnostics” from January 22 to February 2, 2018. On behalf of the SBV Board of Management, Deputy Governor Nguyen Thi Hong congratulated Mr. Stephan Danninger on his first visit to Vietnam in the new position.
Mr. Stephan Danninger was appointed Director of the IMF - Singapore Regional Training Institute (STI) in August 2017. Prior to taking on the position, he worked for 17 years at the IMF headquarters in Washington D.C. During this period, he led projects and teams in various capacities, including the macroeconomic analysis and forecast for Germany, Japan and the United States. He also worked in the IMF’s Research Department and published in various academic journals on topics related to growth, inflation, trade, fiscal policy, financial spillovers and labor market issues…
Deputy Governor Nguyen Thi Hong stressed that the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) fully supports the IMF regional training on “Macroeconomic Diagnostics” in Hanoi because of its practicality, helping to strengthen the capacity of macroeconomic assessment, developing appropriate macroeconomic forecasting scenarios, and highly applicable in monitoring market developments, early detection of risks and policy development.
Overview of the meeting
In recent years, the STI has regularly coordinated with the SBV to provide training courses in Vietnam to officials from other regional countries for many issues such as Financial Programming and Policies, Monetary and Exchange Rate Policy… These training courses were highly appreciated by the IMF and the trainees on the quality of training, the organization and suitability of the training contents. As a result, the SBV has sent more officials to participate in these training courses, while enhancing Vietnam's role as the host country, supporting the IMF's training programs in the region.
SBV Deputy Governor Nguyen Thi Hong expressed her hope that, in the near future, STI will continue to strengthen cooperation and support the SBV in training and improving the quality of human resources, such as organizing training courses on restructuring the banking system, dealing with bad debts, financial stability, monetary policy and foreign exchange management.
At the meeting, both sides reached an unity in continuing to facilitate conditions for SBV officials to participate more in training activities of the IMF-STI, to intensify specialized training and retraining courses for professional staffs of the State Bank of Vietnam.
