On October 16-19, 2019, the delegation of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) led by Deputy Governor Dao Minh Tu attended the IMF/WBG 2019 Annual Meetings in Washington D.C, the USA.
In the framework of the Meetings, Deputy Governor Dao Minh Tu also attended and made a speech at the roundtable conference between the IMF General Director and the ASEAN countries. This was the first conference between the newly-appointed IMF General Director Kristilina Georgieva and the leaders of the ASEAN central banks. Sharing on the 4 priority areas raised by the IMF General Director during her term, i.e. strengthening the global financial safety network, enhancing the IMF’s role and responsibilities for vulnerable countries, improving the IMF’s operational efficiency in a volatile global environment, and continuing to develop the IMF's role and operations to cope with current and future challenges, Deputy Governor Dao Minh Tu shared that Vietnam fully supports the approach of the IMF and the World Bank Group towards increasing the flexibility in supporting the economies, taking into account the characteristics of each economy in the policy-making process and formulating action programs.

In addition, the SBV Deputy Governor also proposed that the IMF continue to accompany and support the Government of Vietnam and other countries in the region in the process of socio-economic development, economic restructuring, growth model renovation, and transition to a digital economy.

On the sidelines of the Conference, Deputy Governor Dao Minh Tu also had meetings with Mr. Axel van Trotsenburg, the newly-appointed WB Managing Director of Operations (replacing Ms Kristilina Georgieva), Mr. Mitsuhiro Furusawa, IMF Deputy General Director, as well as the leaders of the functional departments of the IMF and the WBG. At the meetings, the SBV Deputy Governor expressed the high appreciation of the Government of Vietnam in general and the SBV in particular for the role of the IMF and the WBG in the socio-economic development of Vietnam, the two institutions’ support for the development of the Country Partnership Framework (CPF), as well as the provision of consultancy, policy recommendations, technical assistance and human resource training.

The SBV Deputy Governor expressed his wish that the IMF and the WBG would continue to accompany, support and provide valuable funding sources for Vietnam in developing and implementing the schemes and plans on socio-economic development in the coming time, thereby helping Vietnam to successfully implement the development goals, sustain the achieved successes and continue to develop steadily, sustainably and comprehensively.
