The Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) Le Minh Hung had a meeting with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Country Director for Vietnam, Mr Eric Sidgwick at the SBV headquarter on May 13, 2016.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Country Director - Norio Saito, specialists from Viet Nam Resident Mission and Representatives from International Cooperative Department of SBV.
According to SBV Governor Le Minh Hung, Vietnam Government highly appreciates the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and ADB over the past time, especially ADB’s supports for development projects, policy consultance and capacity improvement for Vietnam agencies.
Prime Minister and the Government of Vietnam has paid much attention to accelerate the cause of implementation of ODA projects in Vietnam. Becoming a middle income country, preferential credits for Vietnam are gradually decreasing. Hence, the Governor proposed Mr Eric Sidgwick to collaborate Vietnam Governmental agencies to analyst thoroughly ADF graduation’s effects in order to build up an appropriate roadmap for Vietnam’s ADF graduation. Concurrently, Vietnam hopes ADB will continue supports for Vietnam in the transitional period to cope with challenges as poverty, uneven development, climate change; and to maximize the achievements obtained from ADB supports funded projects.
The Governor also highly valued the formulation and implementation of Country Partnership Strategy (CPS); and believe the CPS would be updated with several targets of Vietnam social economic development Plan of 2011 – 2020.
Governor spoke highly ADB’s technical supports and preferencial credits granted for financial and banking sector. Those technical cooperative programs have been efficiently developing capital - financial market and microfinance. In the coming time, ADB would consider to accelerate assistance for Vietnam in financial market, inclusive finance and monetary policy management.
Eric Sidgwick stated that macroeconomic stability and inflation control have been well maintained in Vietnam thank to a significant contribution of the SBV. He said ADB is willing to support Vietnam in the cause of economic restructuring, reducing risks to absorb with external shocks from international economic movements.
After recent consultations with SBV and the Government of Vietnam on the CPS, Eric committed to continue supporting and providing financial and other resources to accelerate Vietnam economic development. Especially in financial and banking sector, ADB would continue providing support for financial market and inclusive finance development.
Mr Eric Sidgwick also had a number of working visits to Vietnam Governmental agencies in combination with other sponsors to find out the most appropriate preparation for Vietnam’s ADF graduation in the coming time.
Mr. Eric Sidgwick briefed the information about the celebration of the 50th anniversary of ADB (December 19, 1966) and 20 years of establishment of ADB Resident Mission in Vietnam (December 19, 1996) and desire to coordinate with the SBV in these celebration activities in Vietnam. At the same time, he also announced the next visit to Vietnam of ADB President in middle June 2016.
Governor Le Minh Hung congratulated the anniversary of ADB and affirmed that the SBV will actively participate to organize the important events of ADB. The Governor expressed his pleasure to looking forward to seeing ADB president in Vietnam.
