According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO), the consumer price index (CPI) in October 2018 increased by 0.33% against September 2018, up by 3.89% as compared to that of the same period of 2017 and up by 3.54% as compared to that of December 2017.
Specifically, the prices of ten out of the eleven groups of commodities increased as compared to the previous month.
The price index of the group of traffic registered the highest increase of 1.55%; followed by that of the education group which was up by 0.58%; the price index of the housing and construction materials group was up by 0.31%; the price index of the group of food and catering services was up by 0.22%; the garment, footwear and hat group was up by 0.15%; the group of household appliances and goods increased by 0.11%; the price index of other commodities and services group and the price index of the culture, entertainment and tourism group both increased by 0.09%; the price index of the beverage and cigarette group was up by 0.03%; and the group of medicine and healthcare increased by 0.02% against September 2018.
By the end of September, the postal services was the only group with lower price index, which was down by 0.04% as compared to September 2018.
The core inflation in October 2018 increased by 0.13% as compared to that of the previous month, and increased by 1.67% over the same period of 2017. The average core inflation in the first ten months of 2018 was up by 1.43% as compared to that of the same period of 2017.
The gold price index and the US dollar price both saw an upward trend in October. The gold price index of October 2018 was up by 0.12% as compared to the previous month, down by 1.89% as compared to December 2017, and down by 2.19% as compared to that of the same period of 2017. The USD appreciated by 0.2% against September 2018, up by 2.82% as compared to that of the same period of 2017, and up by 2.80% in comparison with December 2017.
